Tell us a little more about you, where do you reside and how you came to be ‘doing you’ as you are right now?

I currently live in San Francisco California but I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. I first “met” Lisa on Instagram as I followed her when she was working at Nasty Gal as a buyer and that is a job that I always found really intriguing so it was really cool to see someone I admired and the little bits and pieces of her life and her work behind the scenes on Instagram. Time went on and I noticed that her profile in the “about me” section changed from LA to LA/SF and I thought to myself what is she doing in San Francisco?! So I wrote a scaled down cover letter in my notes section on my iPhone and screenshot it then sent it to Lisa on Instagram via DM asking I can buy her a cup of coffee and meet with me for an informative interview about breaking into the fashion industry and her experience because fashion is a tough industry to break into. Lisa was incredibly receptive and told me to pick the cafe and a week later we met! After the meeting, I was blown away from Lisa’s advice as she is incredibly smart and wise with years of numerous industry experience behind her.

A few months later Lisa emailed me asking if I would be interested in modelling for a new “project” she was doing and I, of course, said yes even though if she asked me to mop her floors I would still say yes! During the shoot, she explained to me that she is opening a new online store called “ Lisa Says Gah” and was showing me the first round of merchandise she had ready to launch with. While we were shooting she said, she had to go to “LA for market” and I had just taken a buying class the previous semester so I asked her if she would be open to the idea of me shadowing her while she was in LA going to her showroom appointments and that I would pay my way and meet her in LA! Lisa said “yeah of course!” and a few weeks later I found myself in LA eating avocado toast with Lisa at the Ace Hotel in DTLA and from there we took on the day going to appointments where I had my notebook in hand to take notes on things we saw and the collections. While we were going to the appointments she really let me step in and ask questions and do some of the talking and pulling pieces to practice and gain first-hand experience. The LA trip was such an insightful first look for me at what it means to be a buyer and that each decision is incredibly thoughtful especially with Lisa’s ethos for Lisa Says Gah.

A few days after LA I met with Lisa to go over our notes and get coffee where she asked me if I would be interested in an internship and obviously at that point, my heart was bursting and said yes! I was in school and had a part-time job but made time with Lisa at least two to three times a week where she had me prepping product for the shop and entering items into the database, emailing with vendors and getting ready for the Lisa Says Gah launch party and pop-up shop! I went from intern to part-time assistant buyer within months and now full-time with the company! Overall Lisa has really taken me under her wing and has and continues to be such a big inspiration and mentor in my life! I can’t thank her enough for the patience, opportunity, and experience she has and continues to give me.Location right now?

Profession?
Assistant Buyer & Partnership Coordinator at Lisa Says Gah

What are you grateful for?
I’m grateful for where I am today and being able to wake up with my health every morning along with the opportunity to continue to work at a company in a role I truly love and am so passionate about alongside Lisa Buhler herself of Lisa Says Gah.

Life Motto/ Words to Live By?
“ Don’t compromise yourself. You are all you’ve got” – Janis Joplin

What is your intention at this moment in life?
To work hard, create, collaborate and learn how to be kinder to myself.

Biggest Icon?
Every woman that is currently in my life or I’ve had the pleasure of crossing paths with. There has always been a lesson or wisdom I’ve been given by each woman who has ever supported me in life and I truly think that is completely invaluable because you can’t read about these lessons, they have to be learned and when someone shares their knowledge and experience with you it’s beautiful and priceless. One of the best gifts anyone could give.

What inspires you each day?
Looking back at everything I’ve accomplished personal and professional and realizing that at the moment I never thought I could do the things I have done or I am doing now and realizing that I can do it and that I can figure it out and that I did! I think about things in the past and how I felt at that moment and maybe feeling like a total failure then realizing where I am right now and being like wow! I did it! I think about that whenever I come to something I’m struggling with and that really inspires me to keep going.
The first thing you thought of when you woke up this morning?
The sooner you get out of bed Gabby the sooner you will be able to drink coffee.

Dream vacay?
A trip to Europe with my best girlfriends! Specifically Paris, Spain, Italy, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Greece, and Sweden! So many places!! But those magical destinations off the top of my head. I would also love to travel to Tahiti, Morocco, and Beirut at some point in my life.

What makes your heart skip a beat?

Finding out new strengths I didn’t know I have and seeing someone I admire find their own confidence.

What is your spirit animal and why?

I’ve actually never thought about that but I guess I would have to say maybe a fox? Like a fox, I’m very curious and like to explore new places. I’m fun, gentle and affectionate but I can also be restless and energetic. Like a fox, I might appear younger than I look or innocent on the surface but don’t let that fool you because I may be small but I am clever and mighty.

Star-sign?

Beauty ritual and products you swear by?
My beauty ritual has always started from the inside because I firmly believe that what you put into anything is what you will get out. I focus on whole foods in the most natural state because they make me feel the most nourished and energized along with the additional natural vitamins and nutrients you are also getting from them which benefit so many things like your skin, hair, overall mood etc! I’m a simple gal that believes less is more! I love the CCC cream from CLE Cosmetics because it’s an all-in-1 skincare, primer, foundation and provides SPF 45 for my pale skin! It’s also super lightweight with a decent amount of coverage for someone who doesn’t like to feel like she’s wearing a layer of whipped cream on her face. I like to focus on my skin, eyebrows ( a quick swipe of the Glossier boy brow)  and lips! ( dab on the Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in “Bois De Rose” or the Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in “Vibe” )

Something you would tell your younger self?
You’re doing everything you possibly can and more so don’t worry the right thing will happen
What fulfils you?
Spending time alone to recharge and listen to myself.  I also love quality time with close friends and loved ones in my life especially if me being able to help someone in any way whether that be advice, making them laugh or helping them do something makes me feel really whole.

What is your idea of balance?

I honestly don’t think there is a perfect definition of balance and it truly depends on what your priorities are but I really strive to pay attention to my needs and listen to my body as much as possible because I tend to push and push until there is nothing left because hello Gemini quality 😉 so I really strive to tend to my physical, emotional, creative, intellectual well-being.

Do you collect anything?

Yes! Lipstick and spoons!

Last search on google history?
Flights to Paris, Copenhagen, and Beirut!

Where do you want to be…Next year

Continuing to grow with Lisa Says Gah in my current role while improving and challenging my current skill set as a buyer with the mentorship from Lisa.

Five years
Traveling the world while of course being happy and healthy with people I love and occupied by work I’m passionate about.

Ten years
Hopefully having a family and at least one child would make my heart sing. I love children and am not afraid to say that I do want a family of my own at some point while still working in the industry. I also hope to have a lot of my student loans paid off * total dream mode*
Advice for those reading?
The advice I would give to girls wanting to work in the fashion industry is to work hard and know what you want and get started now if you know what area you’re interested in. Don’t wait to get your first job until after college, instead begin as soon as you can because having experience is essential, and know that sometimes your first job isn’t your dream job, but it will give you insight and prepare you for the future. Knowing how to handle situations and people is important, and working exposes you to everything that could go wrong and everything that can go right. Get started now in some way, take ownership and accountability in your goals because you are the only person to make it happen.
